Applying for Financial Aid

We recommend that all students complete a financial aid application to determine eligibility for grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the financial aid application used to determine financial aid eligibility for students who are U.S. Citizens or eligible Non-Citizens. Students who do not qualify to submit the FAFSA but are Texas residents, must submit the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA). Both applications must be submitted annually. International students who do not qualify to submit the FAFSA or TASFA can submit applications for scholarships.

The Federal Student Aid offers additional information to help you complete your FAFSA.

Students must comply with the University's Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy to receive federal, state and institutional aid.

Important dates to remember:

  • October 1st - FAFSA application opens for the new year (2024-2025 FAFSA application will open in December 2023)
  • January 15th - Priority date to submit the annual application (2024-2025 Priority deadline is April 15th)

Your guide to the Financial Aid process consists of the following steps:

  • Apply for an FSA ID at fsaid.ed.gov so you can electronically sign your application. If you are a Dependent student, your parent or guardian must also apply for an FSA ID. For instructions on how to create an FSA ID .

  • Complete the FAFSA online at studentaid.gov . Include TAMIU's Federal School Code, 009651, on your application. If you have questions when completing the FAFSA, you can contact our office

  • Federal Income Tax returns are needed in order to fill out the FAFSA. You will need yours, if filed, and your parents, if you are a Dependent student. The Direct Data Exchange (DDX) is available through FAFSA on the web. The retrieval tool allows applicants and parents the ability to transfer their income information from the IRS to the FAFSA. It is highly advised that students who are eligible, use the tool to avoid common filing mistakes and processing delays. The tool also makes the verification process easier for students.

If you are not a U.S. citizen or Eligible Non-Citizen but are a Texas Resident, you may be eligible to receive state aid by completing the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA). The paper application is available in our office or for online application TASFA.
