13th Annual Learning Technologies Week Program

MONDAY, 10-31-22 9:00-10:00 A.M.: Digital Storytelling in Teacher Education: A Qualitative Examination of New Media Tools used to Bridge Learn- ing and Application of Literacy Pedagogy. Presenter: Dr. Heriberto Godina Location: WHT 224 Description: The present study builds upon previously published research on digital storytelling and its application for classroom instruc- tion. Recent restrictions to face-to-face learning amplified the need for virtual applications as demonstrations for undergraduate teacher candidate competence in Science of Reading concepts. The engagement with digital storytelling was organized through a “I do, we do, you do” – process, whereby—examples of exemplary digital storytelling techniques were provided for review. Second, participants pre- sented and collaborated with each other to refine their technique. Finally, participants demonstrated mastery learning through an individu- al final project demonstration. This instructional intervention used a multi-phased approach that initially began with short video demon- strations of teacher candidates modeling basic literacy concepts that could be taught to children. In the second phase, students begin to share their digital applications through Voice Thread. Participants provided supportive, constructive commentary on each other’s media interpretations. At the close of the semester, a final project utilizes an exemplary classroom demonstration video presented through a student gallery. This presentation should be of interest to anyone who is considering the integration of digital storytelling as an instruction- al tool. 10: 30-11:30 P.M.: Microsoft's Inclusive Learning & Accessible Tools Presenter: Dr. Cynthia Piña Location: WHT 224 Description: This session will showcase Microsoft tools for learning and accessibility for an inclusive environment in and out of the classroom or office.
