Mosaic (n.) Somethingmade up of different pieces, fitted together by design to form a unified composition. The crucial part above is “somethingmade up of different pieces.” It’s a definition not lost on the world’s university campuses each Fall. That’s when new students take their first steps on campus and returning students resume their journey. Eachbrings their difference to the whole, creating a unified composition. At TAMIU, each Fall’s student arrivals become part of a unified Dustdevil composition. Welcoming the members of that composi- VIRTUAL MOSAIC WELCOMES STUDENTS HOME FOR FALL tion is the Welcome Week tradition created by the Office of Student Orientation, Leadership and Engagement (SOLE). So with all the challenges of a Pandemic Fall, SOLE sought ways to digitally connect with Dustdevils through virtually and socially- distanced offerings. Of all the activities, one powerfully affirmed a remarkable time in the University’s history. Students texted or tagged their photos to create a massive digital mosaic above the phrase “Welcome Back.” Hundreds of distinct images were woven together, each a part of a new, resilient, whole composition. And so, the mosaic that is TAMIU continues. 20
