TAMIU Annual Report 2022

TAMIU DELIVERS 13TH ANNUAL ‘THE BIG EVENT’ Over 450 TAMIU students, faculty, staff, and alumni rolled-up their sleeves for The Big Event, the University’s annual service event that took place this past March. Now in its 13th year, The Big Event combined efforts of volunteers working together to provide community service. Continuing the impactful work completed during the University’s Fall 2021 “Make A Difference Day” volunteer event, this year’s The Big Event returned to the Las Palmas Trail Park and the Tres Laredos Park. Volunteers focused on gathering palm fronds and clean-up efforts at the Trail. In the Park, they handled trash pickup and repainting fixtures. University president Dr. Pablo Arenaz applauded the volunteer efforts of the TAMIU community. “Our hats are off to the 453 students, faculty, staff, and alumni who participated in our annual community service event. It was exciting to help kick off the event and see so many TAMIU students and community members participate,” Arenaz said. The Big Event is organized through the Office of Student Conduct and Community Engagement, in partnership with the Student Government Association. Community partners included the City of Laredo, Councilmember Alyssa Cigarroa, Keep Laredo Beautiful, and the Rio Grande International Study Center. The Big Event initially began at Texas A&M University in College Station in 1982. Embraced in 2009 by the TAMIU community, The Big Event is one of the University’s largest service initiatives. The University’s other service event, “Make A Difference Day,” occurs in the Fall. A video highlighting The Big Event ’22 is at https://go.tamiu.edu/thebigevent-video22 26
