This session will engage the audience in a discussion about the role of technology in the classroom and then further discuss the difference between technology that just facilitates teaching vs. technology that transforms learning. A convergent mixed methods research design study was performed. A 14-item survey was sent to students in the mid- semester. One sample t-test and logistic regression were used for data analysis. Students’ comments to an open-ended question were analyzed. Quantitative and qualitative results were compared to determine if the data align. 1:30-2:30 P.M.: Learning on your Own: Challenges to Online Learning Presenter: Dr. Mehnaaz Momen Location: WHT 224 Description: Learning online can be a solitary experience, missing the advantages of immediate feedback, comfort of classmates, spontaneity of discussion, which we often take for granted in a classroom. I teach Public Administration courses which contain both the- oretical and applied components. As an educator, my challenge has been mainly how can I translate the theory part in more hands-on exercises and keep the material current and interesting though it has to be prepared in advance. I wanted to understand the challenges from the students’ point of view. Based on my analysis of anecdotal and unscientific feedback, I believe that students miss out on the classroom experience of creating rapport and alliances, though they appreciate the fluidity of the online format. In my presentation, I will focus on how I balance the flexibility with rigid scheduling which forces efficient time management, and how I weave in current examples with the preordained reading material to keep the discussions timely and interesting. 3:00-4:00 P.M.: Embedding Virtual Labs in Online IT Courses Presenter: Dr. Yong Chen Location: WHT 224 Description: A virtual lab environment provides students with a set of exploratory, hands-on interactive options designed to teach new technologies. Virtual labs provide students the opportunity to practice their newfound knowledge on real-world job tasks in a safe and virtual environment without the fear of breaking anything. The popularity of virtual lab environments skyrocketed during the Pandemic. This session summarizes the experiences and how I embed a virtual lab in one IT course I taught. Challenges will be discussed. FRIDAY, 11-4-22 9:00-10:00 A.M.: Getting the Most out of Virtual Learning Presenter: Dr. Ashlee Boothe Location: Webinar Description: Learning online is quickly becoming the norm, whether the course is 100% virtual, or is a hybrid.
