Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Police Department, together with CVS Health and the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, have partnered to receive a free Drug Collection Unit.

The Unit will be housed in the TAMIU University Police Department Building and will serve as a drop off location for individuals looking to safely dispose of expired and unwanted prescription drugs.

The Drug Collection Unit will be part of a county-wide medication disposal program sponsored through the Webb County Community Coalition of SCAN.

Currently, the Medication Disposal Program is offered at the Webb County Sheriff’s office, as well as the Webb County Constable Precinct 2 and Precinct 4 offices.

Items that can be accepted at the Units include prescription medications, pet medications, medicated ointments, over the counter medications and vitamins. Items that cannot be accepted include syringes, infectious waste, personal care products, EpiPens, iodine solutions, and more.

Individuals are now advised that disposing of unused medicines by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose potential safety, health and environmental hazards in our community.

In previous years, the University has participated in several Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back events. The local events are part of a larger, nationwide effort. To date, DEA, alongside participating law enforcement partners have collected 12.7 million pounds of expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications since the initiative’s inception in 2010.
