TAMIU’s Annual Welcome Week Goes Virtual

While the upcoming Fall semester is looking quite different at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), students will still have the chance to digitally connect with their Dustdevil family as annual Welcome Week festivities go virtual.

From Aug. 21 – 28, TAMIU’s Student Orientation, Leadership and Engagement Office (SOLE) has organized an impressive roster of events aimed at “welcoming”  incoming and returning students.

All events are free and open to currently enrolled TAMIU students. Event sign up and additional instructions on attending these events will be available via Trailblazers at https://tamiu.campuslabs.com/engage/and through social media channels at www.facebook.com/txamiusoleand www.instagram.com/txamiusole

Welcome Week 2020 begins with a Tik Tok competition where students will have a chance to create and send their best video for a chance to win $100 Dusty Dollars. The contest opens Friday, Aug. 21 and ends Monday, Aug. 24. Submissions will be shared through SOLE’s Instagram.

On Monday, the annual school supply handout will take place. However, individuals will need to sign up before the event as only the first 250 students to RSVP will receive school supplies. Instructions for school supply pick up will be sent through email. 

That same day, Virtual Caricatures will be offered to the first 100 students who RSVP and submit a photo will receive a caricature. Photo submissions and RSVP must be sent by Monday, Aug. 24 at 11:59 p.m.

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, student organizations will meet virtually for a Student Org. Fair from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. via Trailblazers. Attendees can enter into a drawing to win a free semester of books, valued at up to $500. Students can RSVP for a DIY facemask package, limited to 250 students, who will receive a facemask that they can decorate themselves.

Later that day, Rec Sports will host a Fitness Fest where they’ll offer a HIIT Class from 12 – 1 p.m. and Dance Class from 5 – 6 p.m. Both events are virtual.

Several events are slated for Wednesday, Aug. 26, beginning with an Undeclared Majors Workshop, scheduled from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and hosted through the Office of Career Services. Students should RSVP to get additional details.

That same day, from 12 – 4 p.m. a Virtual Photo Collage and Rec. Sports Game Fest from 1 – 4 p.m. will be offered with instructions on accessing these events available via Trailblazers. To add their own photos to the photo collage, students will text or tag their photos to the special hashtag “TAMIUWW2020”. Later that evening, a Virtual Escape Room will happen from 6 – 8 p.m. The Escape Room experience is only open to the first 120 participants and prizes will be available.

The festivities continue on Thursday, Aug. 27 with an iServe Fair from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. where students will have a chance to learn more about serving their community by connecting with the Office of Student Conduct and Community Engagement.

Starting at noon that same day, student-submitted videos will be showcased as part of our TAMIU Got Talent competition. Musicians, artists, dancers, photographers, and students looking to showcase their talents are invited to submit their video for a chance to win a prize. The top winners will receive up to $250 Dusty Dollars.

That evening, students will have a chance to vie for up to $1,500 worth of prizes, including a PS4 and a free books for the Fall 2020 semester (valued at up to $500) during the Virtual Drag Bingo. Joining the festivities is Texas native, RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant and internationally acclaimed drag performer, Alyssa Edwards.

Finally, the week’s events end on Friday, Aug. 28 with a second Undeclared Majors Workshop happening at 11:30 a.m. Later that afternoon, a virtual painting party begins at 3 p.m. Students will RSVP to receive free paint supplies.

The week’s events culminate with a Drive-In Movie featuring the horror classic, The Conjuring. The screening begins at 7:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required and limited capacity. Attendees will receive a goody kit with popcorn, sodas and hot dogs. Only two individuals are permitted per vehicle.
