A student at Texas A&M International University’s  (TAMIU) Julieta and Frank Staggs International and STEM Studies Academy  has been named a Commended Student in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship program.

Arabellah H. Lozano  was notified of her selection by Staggs Academy principal Dr. Patricia E. Uribe.

Lozano will  receive a letter of commendation from the Academy and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2021 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” according to the NMSC, “They represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

The Staggs Academy opened in 2014 and is an innovative, University-level academy on the TAMIU campus for highly gifted and motivated high school juniors and seniors that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and International Studies(STEM).

Academy students earn free tuition, fees and books, participate in advanced and engaging University courses and University life, receive strong administrative and counseling support, pursue degrees in any area, enjoy research opportunities with professors, and graduate with a high school diploma earned with college credits.
