While the ongoing pandemic has postponed celebratory events for high school seniors across the nation, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) took time out this week to  recognize and celebrate high school members  of the Class of 2021 -- on wheels, no less.

Over 280 graduating high school seniors attended TAMIU's  Future Dustdevil Car Parade, Thursday, May 6 from 6 – 8 p.m., said TAMIU vice president for Student Success, Dr. Minita Ramírez.

"We had a terrific turnout and I think we were all excited to have a fun way to connect and congratulate our high school seniors -- and help guide their journey forward to becoming full-fledged Dustdevils.  All of our offices assisting students were on hand for an innovative and fun event.  We had hundreds of cars, with lots of 'happy honking,' and waving," Dr. Ramírez said.

Jessica Treviño, director of the Office of Recruitment and School Relations, concurred.

“Our Future Dustdevils have had a different senior year.  We wanted to celebrate all their accomplishments and begin to embrace them in their new home.  They really seemed to enjoy an opportunity to celebrate and begin their next journey,”  Treviño said.

During the Car Parade, individuals drove  through the University Loop that encircles the campus. Throughout their drive, they were greeted by colorful balloon displays, inflatable arches, pop-up tents and special information and prizes--  including T-shirts, spirit swag and food provided by University staff members.  Many of the high school seniors were accompanied by their parents.

Parade-goers even decorated their vehicles to showcase the University’s school spirit with maroon, silver and gold. Decorated cars got an additional goodie and were entered into a social media contest for the opportunity to receive an additional prize.

Parade-goers ended their route at the "TAMIU Unfinished Stop." There, they had an opportunity to park in a designated area so that members of the University’s Office of Recruitment and School Relations could assist them with questions related to their admission, financial aid or registration. They also had a chance to schedule their appointments for campus tours or in-person registration.

To better maintain the health and safety of all participating individuals, all parade participants remained in their vehicle and were asked to use a face covering while on campus.

Registration for TAMIU's Maymester, Summer and Fall 2021 is currently underway. The University’s plan for Fall is focused on a return to a vibrant, on-campus experience for students, faculty and staff for the 300-acre northeast Laredo campus.
