Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) visual arts students will showcase their creations as part of an upcoming, in-person exhibit.

The exhibit opens Friday, April 30 at 6 p.m. at the Schwartz Gallery and Frontera Gallery, located at 3301 San Bernardo Avenue. The artwork will be on display through Saturday, May 8. Both galleries are open Fridays and Saturdays from 6 to 9 p.m.

Exhibiting artists include TAMIU visual arts students Briana Cabrales, Elkin Cortez, Douglas Naudin, Sofia Nieto and Nehemias Santos.

The exhibit’s title, “More Than One Exit Line,” reflects the different starting points and paths that artists often take, explained Josias Figueirido Rivas, TAMIU assistant professor of Art.

“Art is very different from any other career in the sense that there is not an outline or formula set out before you to follow, but rather each artist must carve their path. The title is purposely inclusive,” Figueirido explained.

Artwork on display represents distinct genres, including both two-and-three dimensional pieces in drawing, mixed media, paintings, printmaking and sculpture.

Figueirido emphasized the importance of these showcases and supporting student-created work.

“Students get the first-hand experience in setting up and curating their work in a gallery context that will be visited by people outside of their circles. They will see and hear how people respond to their work, and they will learn to consider and integrate that feedback into their practices. The show also aims to encourage and contribute to the development of a vibrant artistic community in Laredo,” said Figueirido.

Currently, TAMIU’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts Visual Arts program offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Art, as well as a B.A. in Art with All-Level Certification. Minors in Art History and Studio Art are also offered.

Several courses are available to students including courses in Art History, Ceramics, Design, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and more.
