Ten Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) faculty members have completed the National Association of System Heads – Association of College and University Educators (NASH-ACUE) professional development program, “Scaling Instructional Excellence for Student Success.”

This national initiative helps support transformative and collective strategies targeted at advancing student success through a series of courses. Ongoing efforts are primarily aimed at scaling instructional excellence through intentional, high-quality professional development for faculty members.

Dr. Kevin Lindberg, associate provost for the University, described the scope and impact of the initiative on the TAMIU faculty.

“This year-long endeavor, involving 313 participants from across the Texas A&M University System, was jointly funded by their home institutions and a grant from the Charles Koch Foundation, which supports high-quality teaching, leading to stronger and more equitable student outcomes,” said Dr. Lindberg.

The participating cohort made up of University faculty members included Dr. Mustafa Al Lail, assistant professor of Computer Science and Engineering; Dr. Angelique Blackburn, assistant professor of Psychology; Dr. Shu-Hsiu Chen, assistant professor of Finance; Virginia Watkins Grayson, University College instructor; Daniel González, College of Arts and Sciences adjunct faculty; Dr. Cody Perry, assistant professor of Curriculum and Instruction; Dr. Martha Salinas, clinical assistant professor of Nursing; Dr. Filiz Shine, associate professor of Curriculum and Instruction; Maria Vicharelli, clinical assistant professor of Nursing, and Dr. Yan Zhao, assistant professor of Accounting.

Throughout the year-long initiative, University faculty members took part in courses delivered online through a research-based learning design certified by Quality Matters. The course ultimately led to a certificate in Effective College Instruction, which is endorsed by the American Council on Education.

The modular-based courses focused on several topics, including designing an effective course, establishing a productive learning environment, using active learning strategies, promoting higher-order thinking, and assessing to inform instruction and promote learning. Throughout the process, faculty members also completed written reflections, viewed video demonstrations and received feedback from an ACUE National Reader.

Each faculty member completed 25 learning modules, with an average time commitment of two-to-three hours, per week. Upon completion, participants receive a stipend, certificate, and consideration for promotion or tenure.
