TAMIU Hispanic Heritage Month Activities Ongoing
Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) continues its month-long observance of Hispanic Heritage Month.
On Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m., a virtual lecture features two accomplished TAMIU professors, Dr. Irma Cantú, and Dr. Abigail Meert, as part of the "Diverse Cultures, Diverse Humanities" Lecture Series. Dr. Cantú is associate professor of Mexican and Colonial literature at TAMIU. She has published numerous articles and essays on travel writing and Orientalism in journals in the United States, México, and Europe.
Dr. Meert is an assistant professor of History at TAMIU. Her research focuses on the study of conflict and society in East Africa, looking specifically at how East African political leaders have constructed and asserted their legitimacy since independence.
On Friday, Oct. 15, from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Student Center Ballroom, Dr. Aaron Olivas, TAMIU associate professor of History, will present on "LGBTQ Rights in Latin America," The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Olivas joined TAMIU’s faculty in 2014 and offers courses on the history of the Hispanic World, Spain and Latin America. He received the TAMIU College of Arts and Sciences, department of Humanities’ 2017 Scholar of the Year Award. He has been named one of this year's 12 Laredo Chamber of Commerce School Bell Award winners and most recently, recognized as TAMIU Distinguished Teacher of the Year.
TAMIU Hispanic Heritage Month events are part of a collaboration between the TAMIU Student Orientation, Leadership and Engagement, student organization Campus Activities Board, the TAMIU Office for International Engagement and the TAMIU Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Committee (TIDE).
In September, the "Diverse Cultures, Diverse Humanities" online Lecture Series featured acclaimed South Texas writer ire'na lara silva who spoke about "Art and Transformation: The Stories that Shape Us."
