Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Fall enrollment has held steady despite the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and graduate student enrollment is up.

In official enrollment figures shared with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, TAMIU reported 8,457 students, which included an 8.7% increase in graduate student enrollment.   Undergraduate enrollment was 6,892, with graduate and doctoral enrollment at 1,565. Semester credit hours, upon which the University’s funding is calculated, were 93,216.

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz credited the University’s careful approach to a robust Fall on-campus experience and dedicated health and outreach services.

“Alongside our Texas A&M University System, we had committed our Fall to a return to a vibrant, on-campus experience for students, faculty, and staff.  To help secure that experience, we followed the science and launched a mandatory surveillance testing program for all members of the University community, continued free rapid tests, and offered on-campus vaccinations through a partnership with the National Guard.  These measures, coupled with our ongoing safety and wellness measures and our faculty and staff’s commitment to delivering our mission as an essential State agency, were critical in helping us to secure this enrollment,” Dr. Arenaz said.

He also noted that replacing students who have graduated is a shared challenge for all colleges and universities --  and even more so with the Pandemic’s longevity.

“It’s interesting that despite a record-breaking ’20-’21 graduation class of over 1,850 students, we were able to meet this challenge successfully.  The Pandemic has provided many with a chance to reflect, consider options and plan for a new future,” Arenaz observed.

The Graduate School enrollment increases are driven by an expansion in online offerings and targeted outreach initiatives.  A new Ph.D. in Criminal Justice launched this Fall.   Some 82% of graduate students are enrolled in at least one online, hybrid, or distance class.

Some 56% of TAMIU freshmen students rank in the top 25% of their high school classes, with 24% ranking in the Top 10%.  Of freshmen, 56% have earned college credit in high school.  The Class of 2024 includes 128 Texas high schools.

Additional student demographics show that 61% of students (5,228) are women while 39% (3,231) are men and 94% identify as a minority. Over 20% are from Texas with 77% from Webb County.  Student to faculty ratio is 22:1 and the average undergraduate class size is 26 students, while graduate class size is 15.

Of undergraduates, 77% attend full-time.  Of graduate students, 76% attend full time. The average undergraduate age is 21 and the average graduate student age 33.  Doctoral students are on average 39 years of age.  The University’s youngest student is 13, its oldest 71.

The College with the highest enrollment is the College of Arts and Sciences with a combined undergraduate and graduate enrollment of 3,809 students.  The A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business follows with 1,682 students.  The College of Nursing and Health Sciences has 1,381 and the College of Education 888 students. University College (undergraduate enrollment only) is 699. The College of Nursing is showing the largest increase at 4%.

Top undergraduate majors are Nursing, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Psychology, and Biology.  The undergraduate major with the most growth is the new Petroleum Engineering degree.

Top graduate majors are Business Administration, Curriculum and Instruction, Criminal Justice, Education Administration, and Public Administration. The graduate degree with the most growth is the Information Science degree, offered online.  Graduate enrollment in the Sanchez School of Business has increased 22%.
