Some Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students have found their educational progress championed by the University’s Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) Chapter 296, which has provided fellowships or scholarships to five members.

TAMIU PKP president Dr. Tariq Tashtoush explained that the students’ selection is in keeping with the Chapter’s commitment to learning, and an expansion of student opportunities under the Chapter’s leadership by former president Dr. Lola Norris and himself.

“A long-cherished commitment of our Chapter has been to provide members with fellowship and scholarship opportunities, and we are delighted to be able to do so.  I am honored to take forward the initiatives that Dr. Norris led and affirm that both remain part of our ongoing commitment,” Dr. Tashtoush explained.

The selected students are receiving either the Chapter’s “Love of Learning” Scholarship or a new Fellowship honoring the memory of longtime Phi Kappa Phi member and TAMIU faculty member, the late Dr. Frances “Panchita” Gates Rhodes.  The University recently honored Dr. Rhodes with the dedication of a Children’s and Young Adult Literature Collection in its Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

Students receiving the Chapter’s “Love of Learning” Scholarship are Gabriela Jaime, Melissa Ortega, and Sarah Sanchez.

Receiving inaugural PKP Chapter 296 Dr. Frances “Panchita” Gates Rhodes Fellowships were Alexandra C. Daub and Sara Abi Villanueva.  Villanueva also received a national PKP Love of Learning Scholarship valued at $500.

The “Love of Learning” Scholarship

The “Love of Learning” Scholarship reflects PKP’s mission and promotes academic excellence in all fields of higher education -- while engaging its community of scholars in service to others.

To be selected, applicants must be active PKP members; full-time undergraduate or graduate students, and provide a one-page resume and personal statement of 300-500 words. The Scholarship is $500.  For additional information, go here.

The Dr. Frances G. Rhodes Memorial Fellowship

The Dr. Frances G. Rhodes Memorial Fellowship was generously initiated and provided by one of Dr. Rhodes’ faculty colleagues and fellow PKP member, Dr. Tonya Huber, TAMIU College of Education professor.

Given Dr. Rhodes’ research prowess, the Fellowship focuses on educational research, offering a fitting way to honor the beloved faculty member.

Criteria for the Fellowship include active PKP membership, being a graduate student or recent graduate of the College of Education with a minimum 3.25 GPA, and providing a resume and copies of any published work, or a research-based paper in development and 300 – 500-word personal statement. The Fellowship is $500. For additional information on the Fellowship, visit online.
