South Texas Writing Project

Summer Institute on the Teaching of Writing

STWP conducts a four week Summer Institute on the Teaching of Writing that is the gateway to the National Writing Project's professional community.

Fellows receive a scholarship to cover tuition and fees and can earn up to six hours of graduate credit through TAMIU's College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, or earn a stipend.

At the Summer Institute, teachers share best practices, explore critical research that drives classroom practice, and discover the power of writing to communicate and writing to learn.

Upon completion, fellows become Teacher Consultants of SWTP and are able to participate in the NWP's on-going professional growth and leadership opportunities at the local, state, and national levels.

Summer Institute Goals

Teachers improve teaching by:

• Experiencing the writing process firsthand
• Integrating research and classroom practice
• Promoting teacher professionalism and leadership
• Renewing the spirit at the heart of good teaching.

Teachers receive:

• Six hours of graduate credit from TAMIU
• Stipend to study
• Stipend for tuition.

Teachers study:

• Effective approaches to the teaching of writing
• Successful teaching practices of local teachers
• Classroom research.

Teachers:

• Experience process writing
• Write and collaborate in small writing response groups
• Improve their writing skills.

Community Engagement

The South Texas Writing Project Summer Institute Consultants participate in a variety of volunteer service projects. Partnerships with the Sacred Heart Orphanage, Bethany House of Laredo, and the Boys and Girls Club have provided the project opportunities to give back to the community of Laredo and surrounding areas.
