Paving the Road to Success!
Congratulations to student Mayra A. Regalado on her appointment to the Sames Motor Company team. Mayra is a senior from Eagle Pass, TX majoring in marketing and works closely with their marketing department where she has already taken part in a “brainstorming session” for an important event. She has enjoyed working at Sames because she has learned greatly from “real life examples and gets hands on experience.”
She wished to acknowledge professors Dr. J. Mukherji and Dr. Landeck for making marketing classes fun and interesting. She has learned significantly from surveys, marketing research, and the challenges they present to students.
Mayra’s career goal was to find employment in marketing. She conveyed that Career Service’s online job database, Dusty Works, was of great help in finding employment.
Kudos to student Elvira Barrientos! She is a new addition to Cropper's Corner Scrapbook Store & Workshop. Elvira is a Freshmen working towards a major in communications; currently her ambition is to finish school. Like Mayra, Elvira was able to find employment through Dusty Works. She found the system very easy to use and liked the fact that it had a variety of jobs and was able to narrow down her search.
Her experience has been a rewarding one as she has learned how to integrate activities into different art forms and she has also learned much from interacting with customers. In addition, she feels TAMIU has helped prepared her to work in the real world, for she has learned how to be responsible and organized through the simple act of scheduling her classes. She wishes to acknowledge professors Ms. Alma Jasso and Dr. Jerry Thompson for helping make algebra and history fun classes.
Both Mayra and Elvira attribute their admiration to their as they have served as mentors —guiding them through their road to success. Both employers Mr. Cortez ’82 and Mrs. Ratliff ’87 consider that any student should have good communication skills, and should present themselves in a positive light during an interview. According to Mr. Cortez, Sames' general manager, "it's all based on the interview: appearance, charisma. You have to market yourself.” But most importantly, he states, “Choose a career you feel you’ll enjoy doing for many years.”
Jeni Ratliff’s advise for students on success “believe in yourself, don’t be nervous during an interview, and be passionate about your work.” Both alumni emphasized the importance of choosing a career in which “you do what you love.”
