What is SafeZone?

TAMIU is enhancing security and support for the University community by launching SafeZone, a unified safety, communications, and well-being service.

SafeZone is a free mobile app for all University faculty, staff, and students.

Once installed, you can:

  • Report safety concerns 24/7.
  • Get connected quickly with mental health professionals if you are feeling depressed, anxious, or overwhelmed.
  • Activate location sharing with authorities if alone and concerned for safety.
  • Anonymously report incidents via text message, photograph, and location.
  • Control your profile data and what is shared; location is only shared when you raise alerts, check in, send reports, or request assistance.

FAQs

The SafeZone App  is now the default method for contacting the University Police Department (UPD) as it provides a more efficient and direct way for students, faculty and staff to reach out compared to classroom phones. The app significantly improves users’ ability to contact UPD directly from their mobile devices, ensuring quicker response times through enhanced location services and improved on-campus safety.
After downloading the App, sign in using your NetID username and password.

Every emergency is different, but here are some examples

  • If you feel threatened, or if someone is threatening or has just threatened you.
  • If you have been assaulted or are the victim of a robbery.
  • If you are hurt or injured (or use First Aid if it's a minor injury).
  • If you see somebody else being threatened, assaulted or robbed.
When you tap any of the three SafeZone alert buttons, a "timer" circle is shown winding down (like a clock). If you accidentally press any SafeZone Call button, you can cancel the Call by tapping the button again while the "timer" is winding down. After the Call (Alert) has been sent, you can still cancel your request, but you will still be contacted by Police Dispatch to be sure that you are OK.
No, the SafeZone app only shares your location with the UHD Police when you press one of the three alert buttons (Emergency, Medical, Assistance), or Check-In. Your right to privacy is always respected and you can cancel an alert or a check-in at any time.
To run SafeZone you need to be on Android version 6+ or iOS 12.2
DustyALRT will be replaced by SafeZone, a free, unified App-based safety, communications, emergency management, and wellbeing service.
SafeZone combines multiple functions including mass and targeted communications, personal alarms, and emergency response coordination tools. It enables users to request urgent assistance by pushing a single button and makes it easy for students, faculty, and staff to ask for help or report safety concerns. SafeZone download and use helps make our TAMIU community and visitors safer.

Students, faculty, and staff will receive University emergency push notifications via the free SafeZone App. They will need to download, install, and sign in.

Notifications sent via SafeZone will be shared on the University’s website, digital signage, select official social media, and public campus desktops.

Email notifications will be sent to official TAMIU email addresses from safezone@tamiu.edu

Text notifications can only be sent to those providing a cell phone number on the App, and who have not opted out of SMS.
