TAMIU Students Receive Scholarships

Over $15,000 in scholarships has been awarded to twenty Texas A&M International University students.

The TAMIU students each received $750 from the Texas Alliance for Minority Participation Scholarship (Texas AMP), a scholarship for minority undergraduate students majoring in mathematics, science, or computer information systems.

TAMIU students who were first-time recipients of the Texas AMP this Fall include Guadalupe Contreras, majoring in Mathematics; German G. Jaramillo, Civil Engineering; Noe F. Paredes, Mathematics; Jessica Ann Santos, Biology; Maria del Rosario Garcia, Computer Information Systems; Mireya Ramos, Mathematics; Octavio Gaytan, Jr., Electrical Engineering; Veronica Gonzalez, Biology; and Oscar Eric Ramirez, Biology.

Returning University students who again received the Texas AMP include Irma Garcia, Mathematics; Veronica Garcia, Mathematics; Laura Huerta, Mathematics, Belinda Medina, Mathematics; Alberto Mendez, Mathematics; Rodrigo Perez, Biology; and Sonia Rodulfo, Mathematics.

Recipients who have transferred to TAMIU from a lower-level institution include Edward Hernandez, Biology; Celina Niave, Mathematics; Gerardo Palizo, Mathematics; and Gabriela D. Rodriguez, Mathematics.

The Texas AMP Scholarship offers $750 per long semester for full-time undergraduates majoring in math, science with the exception of health science, or Computer Information Systems (BAAS). Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents with an overall GPA of at least 2.5. This scholarship is awarded in the Fall and Spring.

Over $36,000 in Texas AMP Scholarship money is available for 1995- 1996.

TAMIU sudents who wish to apply for the scholarship should contact Texas AMP Scholarship Coordinator Dr. Julio F. Madrigal, Chair of the Department of Psychology/Sociology, at 326-2475. TAMIU office hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.
