THECB Gives Approval for New Biology Degree at A&M International

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) has provided its approval for the addition of a new Biology degree to the Texas A&M International University degree inventory.

The addition of the Bachelor of Science in Biology brings the University's undergraduate degree inventory to 25. Twenty-two graduate degrees are also offered.

University president Charles Jennett said the approval will provide University students with greater options.

"This degree was developed in response to needs from our service community. There has been an historic shortage of degreed individuals in the sciences, particularly among minority populations, and we believe the addition of this degree can help us to address this shortage," Jennett said.

Dr. Edwin A. Martinez, dean of the College of Science and Technology said student interest in the degree has been strong.

"We've had students who have been monitoring the progress of this degree with a great deal of interest. This will provide them with the background they will need to become science educators, secure research employment or apply to graduate or professional schools. Interest has been especially strong from magnet schools in our region which have a curriular focus on the sciences," he said.

The new degree is the second biology degree offered by the University. The first was a Bachelor of Arts in Biology.
