Free, instant information on federal job openings in the local, regional, and national area is just a click away at Texas A&M International University.

Viky Garcia, director of Career Planning and Placement at A&M International, explained the University now has a state-of-the-art touch screen computer kiosk which provides instant access to information on employment opportunities, internship programs, and careers with the federal government.

The new service will be launched at a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled Monday, August 10 at 2 p.m. in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library.

"In an effort to improve the representation of Hispanics and other minorities in the federal workforce, the US Department of the Treasury has provided free computer kiosks to A&M International and 19 other educational institutions throughout the United States that have a high enrollment of minority students," said Garcia.

Nancy Killefer, assistant secretary for management and Chief Financial Officer for the Department of the Treasury said, "These kiosks will provide a direct link between the Treasury Department and these schools. We can't be everywhere, but technology can certainly get us to more places."

Representing the Treasury Department at Monday's event will be Maria Riva, US Customs Director of the South Texas Customs Management Center.

Garcia noted that in deciding where to place the kiosks, the Treasury Department considered where it would have employment vacancies in the future and whether the host educational institution offered degrees that were compatible with Treasury vacancies.

The information available from the kiosk is divided into three major categories, "General Information," "Current Job Openings," and "What's Hot." Information is electronically updated daily by the Treasury's Office of Personnel Management via a dedicated telephone line.

The "General Information" section contains application procedures, information for students, veterans and uniformed services, information on job scams, plus other employment topics.

The section on "Current Job Openings" contains a current list of federal employment opportunities, with entries subdivided into 10 categories including "entry level professional," "clerical and technical," and "year 2000 jobs." Each entry includes opening and closing dates, salary, job duties, qualifications, application information, and other information for applicants.

The "What's Hot" section contains information on the latest trends and jobs in highest demand.

Persons who use the kiosk can print all necessary forms and information from the kiosk at no charge.

"This is a great tool for anyone who is interested in obtaining information on federal employment opportunities. I would encourage A&M International students and graduates, as well as members of the community, to take advantage of this high-tech tool," Garcia added.

The computer kiosk is located in the lobby of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library. The kiosk may be accessed during Library hours, 7:30 a.m. - 10 p.m. Monday - Thursday, 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday, 10 .m. - 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and 12 noon - 8 p.m. Sunday.
