ATP LLC, the DaimlerChrysler-owned Laredo Proving Ground for Mercedes Benz passenger vehicles, has provided Texas A&M International University with a gift in support of higher education.

Helmut Keller, Chairman of ATP LLC, said the gift of $2,500 signals the company's strong interest in helping higher education.

"This gift is intended to help A&M International to support the education of young people in this region. ATP plans to continue its support of higher education in the future," Keller said.

The gift was presented by Sonja Quick, Laredo Facility Coordinator.

Dr. Charles Jennett, A&M International president, commended the corporate support provided by ATP LLC.

"We are honored that ATP LLC has made support of higher education here at A&M International part of their corporate citizenry. We look forward to a long association with them and know that our students appreciate this investment in their University," Dr. Jennett said.

The Laredo Proving Ground is a 2000-acre facility that incorporates a 5-mile High Speed track and a 3-mile Oval course with 10 different road surfaces that mimic driving situations.

The facility offers year-round testing of Mercedes Benz passenger vehicles, including prototype vehicles. Originally constructed in 1963 by United States Rubber and Company, the Proving Ground was purchased by Michelin in 1991 and later sold to ATP LLC in April 1998. Improvement costs at the facility are expected to reach $2.7 million before the year 2000.

Other DaimlerChrysler facilities are located in Papenburg, Germany; Chelsea, Michigan; Phoenix, Arizona; Bemidji, Minnesota and Arjeplog, Sweden.
