Summer Enrollment Climbs 13% at A&M International

Summer session enrollment figures at Texas A&M International University are climbing faster than the summer's heat index.

Total enrollment is up 13% with 1,835 students enrolled in Summer Session I classes. Enrollment for SSI 1998 was 1,624.

Semester Credit Hours (SCH) are also up 17% to 8,356. SSI 1999 SCH was 7,155.

Registrar Barbara Lunce attributed the enrollment increase to four factors: special summer programming, returning teachers, concurrent enrollment and recent high school graduates getting a head start on their baccalaureate degree.

"This summer we're offering a special Bridge program for regional high school students, a youth entrepreneurship program in business and concurrent enrollment classes available to eligible Distinguished Academic Program (DAP) students.

"Historically, we also see teachers returning in the summer to work on graduate degrees and additional certifications. Finally, many of this May's high school students are foregoing a summer vacation to get ahead on their higher education," Lunce explained.

Lunce said a recent change in state law has made participation in the DAP courses mandatory and available to rising seniors.

"We have over 40 students who are involved in courses for DAP honors and are encouraging all eligible junior and senior high school students to consider our concurrent enrollment programs," she said.

Summer Session II registration is July 5 with classes beginning July 6.

Early registration for the Fall semester is July 19-30. General registration is Aug. 23-24 with classes set to begin Aug. 25.
