Eight nursing students and two faculty from the University of San Luis Potosi will travel to Laredo Jan. 28 - 30 to participate in three full days of classes at Texas A&M International University's Dr. F.M. Canseco School of Nursing.

Participation of the San Luis group will help broaden the perspective on social, political and economic effects on health of the University's "International and Border Health Nursing" course.

On Friday, Jan. 28 the visiting nursing students, plus A&M International nursing students, and 12 nursing faculty from the University of Tamaulipas in Nuevo Laredo, will participate in a special presentation and dialog at 1 p.m. in Canseco Hall room 101. Guest speaker will be Marta Ojeda, Executive Director of the Coalition for Justice in the Maquilas. Ojeda is a former union organizer in Nuevo Laredo and currently based in San Antonio. Her presentation will be in Spanish and open to the public.

During the rest of the day, the nursing students, joined by guests from a church program in Nuevo Laredo that assists persons deported from the United States, will participate in classes conducted by faculty from the Canseco School of Nursing, and a tour of historical sites in Laredo.

On Saturday, nursing students from A&M International and San Luis Potosi will spend the day in Nuevo Laredo with the School of Nursing at the University of Tamaulipas, learning about nursing's role in the colonias, maquilas, and other sites.

The class will meet on Sunday to summarize their learning and plan for the continuation of the course in San Luis Potosi in April. This binational course is part of the University's unique international mission.
