University's HR Officers Earn Prestigious PHR Certification

Two members of Texas A&M International University's Human Resources Department have joined an elite group of human resources professionals who have earned Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification.

Sandra Villanueva, associate director of Human Resources, and Diana Hazzard, human resources benefits specialist, passed a rigorous examination in San Antonio by the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).

Helen Drinan, president and CEO of the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), said that the certification signifies that Villanueva and Hazzard have mastered the theoretical knowledge and practical experience in human resources management for their profession.

"PHR certification clearly demonstrates a commitment to personal excellence to the human resource profession," Drinan said.

Hazzard and Villanueva become the second and third members of the University's Human Resources Department to achieve certification. Director Elizabeth N. Martinez earned her certification in 1997. She said that Hazzard and Villanueva's commitment will contribute to the department's and the University's success.

"Their accomplishment contributes to the overall success of this department. We are proud that they have a commitment to their profession and that this commitment will allow us to provide the best service to our employees and the community as a whole in our human resources mission," Martinez said.

Villanueva has been with the Human Resources office for 10 years and is currently working in the compensation and employment area. She serves as a member of the Board and former secretary for the Laredo Association for Human Resources Management (LAHRM) and is currently treasurer for the association.

Hazzard joined A&M International in 1999. She holds a BA in Human Resource Management from Eastern Washington University in Spokane, Wa., and is currently completing an MBA at A&M International. While in Spokane, she served as president of the EWU student chapter of the SHRM.

In order to be PHR certified, applicants must pass a comprehensive examination and demonstrate a strong background of professional human resource experience.

HRCI is the credentialing body for human resource professionals and is affiliated with SHRM, the world's largest organization dedicated exclusively to the profession. The Institute's purpose is to promote the establishment of professional standards and to recognize professionals who meet those standards.
