Registration for Community Art Classes at TAMIU

Tap into the right side of your brain and find your inner artist with a beginner adult painting class in acrylics at Texas A&M International University this Fall. Register for the class Thursday, Aug. 21 from 4 – 7 p.m. at the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, room 219.

Admission to the University is not required.

Classes meet Thursdays, from 6 – 9 p.m. from Thursday, Sept. 4 – Thursday, Dec. 4.

Tuition is $110 per month or $300 for the three-month session if paid in full. The fee does not include art supplies. A supply list will be available at registration.

“This is an ideal studio class for the beginning or intermediate artist who wants a structured approach to acrylic painting or for someone who simply wants to learn how to paint,” said Kimberly Walton, instructor.

“In this 12-week course, students will focus on the basics of acrylic painting by painting still life and landscapes. Participants will investigate design, color mixing and color theory, improving technique and creating art with strong compositions,” Walton explained.

Students will start with simple painting exercises on the first day of class and throughout the course will be introduced to a variety of painting styles and techniques. Demonstrations, informal critiques and individual suggestions will be incorporated to help students expand their technical skills and increase their confidence to paint.

“Students will be encouraged to paint outside of class as well as investigate a variety of art movements and historical artists. Participants will work to improve their individual goals. Those who have painted before will be encouraged to investigate their own style of painting. Students will work at their own pace with suggested assignments,” added Walton.

There are no prerequisites for this course. Previous drawing experience is helpful but not required.

A native of South Carolina, Walton received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Winthrop University and has lived in Laredo since 2003. As a professional artist and art educator, she has been active in the arts community as a studio art instructor at TAMIU and children’s afterschool and summer art programs for Hecho en Encinal.
