Spring Break Message From Dr. Ray Keck

Dear University Community Members,

Spring Break will soon be upon us. At Texas A&M International University, Spring Break is observed March 16-21, 2009.

Every year, over 100,000 U.S. students travel to Mexico. The U.S. State Department is issuing Spring Break warnings in light of recent increases in violence in Mexico, much of it along the US-Mexico border.

At this time, the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs, is maintaining a Travel Alert for Mexico. Details are available at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3028.html

According to the site, “It is imperative that travelers understand the risks of travel to Mexico, how best to avoid dangerous situations, and whom to contact if one becomes a crime victim. Common-sense precautions such as visiting only legitimate business and tourist areas during daylight hours, and avoiding areas where prostitution and drug dealing might occur, can help ensure that travel to Mexico is safe and enjoyable.” Safety and Security information will be posted regularly, so please bookmark the site for regular visits.

In addition, The State Department has created an informative web-based campaign, “Know Before You Go,” located at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/spring_break_mexico/spring_break_mexico_2812.html#

The site provides information on entry requirements, Mexican law, safety and security, city-specific information, and a directory to U.S. Consulate offices, among much more.

While TAMIU does not seek to limit your Spring Break experience, we do urge that you practice all due cautions and to be well aware of your surroundings and potential for risk or danger, no matter your destination.

Should your plans specifically include travel in Mexico, please visit both of the above sites and follow suggestions posted there, including registration with the Consulate to make your presence and whereabouts known.
