TAMIU BiNational Center Hosts Harvard Lecturer on México Nov. 11

One of the nation’s top lecturers on issues in Mexico will be making a special visit to lecture at Texas A&M International University on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 1:30 p.m.in the Student Center Theatre, room 236.

Dr. Leonardo Vivas, a Fellow at Harvard University’s Carr Center for Human Rights, will present, “Violence, Governance, and Economic Development at the US-Mexico Border: The Case of Nuevo Laredo and its Lessons,” his ongoing research on the issues currently facing Mexico. Admission is free of charge and open to the public. It is being hosted by TAMIU’s BiNational Center, dedicated to enhancing relationships between the United States and other Western Hemispheric countries and the Department of Behavioral Sciences.

Dr. Vivas is the coordinator of the Carr Center’s Latin American Initiative. He is a Sociologist from Central University in Venezuela, with an M.Phil from University of Sussex, United Kingdom and a Ph.D from Nanterre Université in Paris.

He currently teaches Latin American Politics at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. He founded and for several years has led Latin Roots, an organization devoted to Latino Culture and Education in Massachusetts.

Vivas has been a Fellow and associate researcher at Harvard’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. At Tufts University, he taught a course about the Chavez Era in Venezuela. Originally from Venezuela, he was Director of Industry in the Development Ministry and founder of several non-profit organizations there.

Professor Vivas has published two books about Venezuela's political crises and co-edited another about grass roots management. He writes for the media both in the Boston area and in Venezuela.
