Printing Goes Wireless at TAMIU

Texas A&M International University students can now print to campus lab printers wirelessly from any device.

The new capability expands on the University’s wireless network which encompasses the entire campus, explained TAMIU associate vice president for information technology and chief information officer Leebrian Gaskins.

“TAMIU students, faculty and staff can now submit print jobs to lab printers over the wireless network from any device by accessing uprint.tamiu.edu.  They simply provide their NetID and password and they’re ready to print,” he said.

Current wireless printing sites are located in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library and the Senator Judith Zaffirini Student Success Center.  Additional locations are forthcoming.

Gaskins said the campus’ wireless enhancements have proven popular with the University community.

“This past summer, we replaced our existing wireless infrastructure because of the need for improved wireless service on campus to better accommodate enrollment growth and expanding online class offerings.  TAMIU students, faculty and staff are all keen users of wireless devices and our increased enrollment meant greater demand for wireless access.  The response has been overwhelmingly positive throughout our campus community, with students being especially appreciative of the advantages our wireless campus affords them,” Gaskins explained.

“With the mushrooming usage of smartphones, tablet computers and iPads, on-campus demand has grown considerably.  Understandably, students expect the ability to use their devices seamlessly across campus, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Now, they can add printing to the University’s expanding wireless services portfolio,” he noted.
