Enjoy “Valentines with Jane Austen” at Texas A&M International

University (TAMIU) Wednesday, Feb. 15 at one or both events hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Humanities.

An “Afternoon Tea” is scheduled from 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. in Anthony J. and Georgia A. Pellegrino Hall (PH), room 116 and a free movie screening of “Pride and Prejudice” starring Keira Knightley will be offered at 7 p.m. at Alamo Drafthouse.

Both events are free and open to the public.

“We are hosting the event because Jane Austen’s novels often contain a romance, and I thought her works would be the perfect backdrop for a Valentine’s Day event. Also, 2017 marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of two of Austen’s novels: “Persuasion” and “Northanger Abbey,” said Dr. Ula Klein, TAMIU assistant professor of English.

The TAMIU League of Empowered Women will provide light snacks at the tea, but participants are encouraged to take their own sack lunch.

“In addition to tea and cookies, we will also have Jane Austen-themed door-prizes and trivia, as well as clips from some of the more famous film adaptations of her novels,” added Dr. Klein.

“Both events are free and open to the public. The screening at the Drafthouse is first-come, first-served; there are no tickets. Food and drinks will be available to purchase from the Drafthouse as usual. We will have door prizes at this event, too,” Klein said.

For more information, contact Klein at 326.2643 or ursula.klein@tamiu.edu or visit offices in PH 215C.

University office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.
