Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) director for Student Conduct and Community Engagement Mayra Hernández has been selected as one of 82 women statewide to become a member of the Leadership Texas Class of 2019.

Leadership Texas is the first statewide program for women’s leadership development designed specifically to help women learn about critical issues outside of their own industries and spheres of influence.  Launched in 1983, it provides opportunities and access to help women impact the future of the  evolving State of Texas. More than 6,300 women have completed the program.

The theme for the 2019 program year is “Enlightened Leadership for the Future: Leading in the Lone Star State.”

“Participants will visit San Antonio, Laredo, Bryan/College Station and Austin, where each city’s opportunities and response to challenges will be highlighted,” noted Heidi Murray, Leadership Women’s (LW) chief operating officer.

At TAMIU, Hernández provides leadership and oversight for the University’s community engagement program, student adjudication process, conflict resolution and crisis management, student emergency aid, and student ethical development initiatives.

Her ability to inspire hundreds of students to serve in the community –locally and globally—earned the University national recognition for generating the equivalent of over $2 million dollars in monetary community impact.  She is credited for TAMIU’s receiving the United States’ Presidential Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for two consecutive years.

As a community engagement advocate, Hernández serves as chair and member to multiple community boards including the Laredo Rotary Club and City of Laredo Economic Development Advisory Committee.

A native Laredoan and mother to 8-month-old baby boy Obi, and aunt to Christian and Angel Hernández, she graduated from  TAMIU, receiving her Bachelor in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice and her Master’s degree in Political Science with a minor in Education Administration.

Hernández is one of 82 outstanding women leaders competitively selected from across the State to participate in the longest-running women’s leadership development program in the US.  Throughout the year-long program, she will have the opportunity to broaden her perspective across the State.

Now in its 37th consecutive year, Leadership Texas is the flagship program of LW, a non-profit dedicated to producing programs to help women recognize their full potential and encourage them to make a difference in their community and in their organizations.

Through contributions by Leadership Women Sponsors, the Leadership Texas program continues to provide the most up-to-date information on leadership and issues affecting the State. Leadership Women sponsors include Texas Instruments, Southwest Airlines and Essilor.
