Four Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) undergraduate students alongside faculty Drs. Kameron Jorgensen and Keith Combrink, assistant professors of Chemistry, were awarded and presented at this year’s American Chemical Society (ACS) national meeting recently in Orlando, FL.

The students are members of the TAMIU’s ACS student chapter, as well the National American Chemical Society, a professional organization of more than 200,000 chemists, chemical engineers, and chemical service providers from around the world.

During the meeting, the student chapter members received an Honorable Mention Award. Accepting the award were students Karen Murillo, Karimeh Ortiz, Franchesca Ramírez and Nicolette Valdez.

In addition to receiving the Award, the students presented a chemistry demonstration during the Chemistry Demo Exchange, and a student chapter poster titled, “Advancing Chemistry on the Border.”

Dr. Jorgensen, who serves as the University’s ACS student chapter advisor, presented her atmospheric chemistry research in an oral presentation in the Computational Chemistry division. Dr. Combrink, co-advisor to the ACS student chapter, presented his research in a technical poster in the Organic Chemistry division.

Undergraduate student Raymond Cortez and Dr. Hari Mandal, TAMIU associate professor of Chemistry, also attended and presented their research posters in the Organic Chemistry division.

During the conference, students also attended sessions targeting undergraduates, ranging from graduate school recruiting, research poster presentations to undergraduate socials, where students met with fellow Chemistry and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics majors from across the U.S. During their stay in Orlando, students also found time to enjoy the city sights and theme parks.

Funding for the trip was made possible through support by the University’s Quality Enrichment Plan - ACT on IDEAs, the College of Arts and Sciences, and an ACS Student Travel Grant.
