Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Greek Council was recently named the recipient of two national awards from the Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values (AFLV) during its recent virtual conference.

TAMIU received awards in the Education and Innovation Three-Star Category – the highest category rating possible for college campuses. The University was honored alongside other major universities, including the University of Oklahoma, University of Missouri, University of Arkansas, Purdue University, and North Carolina State University.

Currently, the University’s Greek Council includes local chapter members of Alpha Psi Lambda National, Inc., Delta Xi Nu Multicultural Sorority, Inc., Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc., Omega Delta Phi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Delta Lambda Sorority, Inc., Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc., and Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc.

“These awards demonstrate the collective efforts, impact and success of the TAMIU Greek community, breaking down stereotypes on what it means to be a member of a sorority or fraternity. TAMIU students have consistently raised the bar on what it means to be Greek, and the larger fraternal movement is beginning to take notice of our community,” said Dr. Nicholas Hudson, director of TAMIU’s Office of Student Orientation, Leadership and Engagement.

Hudson continued, “TAMIU sorority and fraternity members continue to exceed student GPA average and are more engaged than the average TAMIU student. They are now leading the way nationally on what it means to create a Greek community that benefits the larger campus, city and global communities.”

This was the first year the University was able to attend the AFLV Conference and enter the AFLV Council Compass accreditation program. This developmental program assesses operations, critical thinking, the ability to address issues unique to the community culture, and new ideas and initiatives a council creates and sustains that make a difference.

The Council Compass program asks University-wide Greek councils to reflect on their achievements in four directional areas, including a Council’s accountability, collaborative efforts, education and innovation.
