Educational Aide Exemption Program Available at TAMIU for School District Employees

Individuals employed at a public school district in Texas interested in pursuing full teacher certification may be eligible to receive financial assistance through the Educational Aide Exemption Program. 

Certain school district employees may qualify for a need-based exemption from tuition and certain fees through this initiative, available at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

School district employees interested in pursuing this financial assistance opportunity at TAMIU should submit their application to the Office of Financial Aid before the 12th class day of the semester for which the student Is applying. Program funding is limited. 

Approximately two weeks are required for processing the application. The deadline to apply is the last class day of the semester for which the individual is applying. 

To take advantage of the Educational Aide Exemption Program, applicants must be Texas residents and registered for Selective Service, or be exempt from this requirement. Individuals must also show financial need. 

Individuals should be employed by a public school district in Texas and working full-time in a classroom directly with students in a teaching capacity, either as an educational aide for at least one school year within the past five school years. Substitute teachers working 180 days of the past five school years are also eligible.

Additionally, individuals should meet satisfactory academic progress requirements established by TAMIU.

Individuals must be enrolled in courses required for teacher certifications in one or more areas that the Texas Education Agency has determined to be experiencing a critical shortage of teachers at public schools in Texas.

TAMIU’s Fall 2021 plans are focused on a return to a full and vibrant on-campus experience for all students, faculty and staff at its 300-acre northeast Laredo campus. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 23, 2021.

This Fall at TAMIU, degree-seeking students can benefit from a pilot program, TAMIU Books IncludED, providing all TAMIU required textbooks and course materials free of charge.  It delivers course materials to students in multiple formats, including  digital, open educational resources, and print.  Students who opt not to receive free digital textbook and course materials can purchase physical materials.
