TAMIU College of Education Students, Alumni Present Book Giveaway for World Teacher's Day

In celebration of the UNESCO-designated World Teacher's Day, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) College of Education's faculty, students and alumni  program, POSSE, presented a book giveaway Saturday, Oct. 16 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Outlet Shoppes at Laredo located at  1600 Water St.

POSSE (Professional Opportunities Supporting/Synergizing Scholarly Engagement) members distributes hundreds of books including storybooks, textbooks, reference books, literature and history books written in English and Spanish for all ages at the event.

The event, free and open to the public, was part of a  partnership between TAMIU's College of Education and The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo. It was coordinated by TAMIU College of Education graduate and POSSE Learning Ambassador Maricruz Flores Vásquez.

Dr. Tonya Huber, TAMIU professor of Education, said the event was intended to provide the local community with a variety of literacy books.

Some of the POSSE members, graduates from the College of Education's online MS programs and residing outside of Laredo, traveled to Laredo to volunteer at the event from other Texas cities including Athens, Austin, Harlingen, Houston, Lyford, McAllen, Riddle, Rockwall, San Antonio, Winnie, and Wylie.

Among POSSE alumni members, three are graduates of TAMIU College of Education programs and are now pursuing doctoral degrees in Education. They include Lorena Cestou (University of the Incarnate Word), Priscilla Salazar (University of the Incarnate Word), and Sara Villanueva (Texas Tech University).

Founded by Huber in 2017, POSSE is a TAMIU College of Education Program committed to empowering change-making through research and community engagement, focusing on the United Nations’ Education 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals to achieve this unifying mission.

The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo is a 358,000-square foot, two-level outlet shopping center on the banks of the Rio Grande River in downtown Laredo. The center boasts nationally renowned designer stores.
