The future of Texas classrooms could brighten considerably thanks to young potential educators taking part in the Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) Area I Conference Friday, Dec. 9 at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

The day-long Conference is expected to attract over 800+ high school students interested in the teaching profession. The Conference theme is “Teach for the Stars.”

TAFE is a co-curricular statewide non-profit (501 c3) student organization created to allow young men and women an opportunity to explore the teaching profession. It was created in 1984 to provide the best and brightest high school and middle school students in Texas with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions about pursuing careers in education. It is sponsored by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals, and governed by a board of directors comprised of teachers, students and principals.

TAMIU College of Education Dean, Dr. James O’Meara, is excited about the opportunity to meet with and encourage young teachers to join the profession.

“This is a great opportunity to see the best future teachers from across South Texas compete and show why they will be our bright stars championing the future of Texas education. Our College of Education students, faculty and staff will be helping as judges and Conference assistants. We are looking forward to encouraging these youngsters to help Texas continue to lead and sustain the classrooms of the future,” Dr. O’Meara said.

The Conference begins with Registration at 8 a.m. with an Opening General Session at 9 a.m., both in the TAMIU Student Center.

A keynote address will follow with College of Education Dean O’Meara. Exhibits and a College Fair will be available for viewing from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. Competitive events will take place across campus while Breakout Sessions will be held in Bob Bullock Hall from 9:45 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. TAFE officer elections for TAFE participants will take place from 2 – 2:30 p.m.

Capping off the day will be a Closing Awards Ceremony from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts’ Recital Hall with recognition of outgoing and incoming officers, and State competition qualifiers.
