Funeral services have been scheduled in San Antonio for a former Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) administrator who served the University for 30 years.

José “Joe” García passed away in San Antonio on January 10, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born on September 18, 1939 and was 83 years old. Many had the good fortune to have worked alongside Joe, or to have benefited from programs and systems he put in place at TAMIU and at Texas A&M University System campuses.

“The University family extends its most sincere condolences to Gloria and the García family at this saddest of times.  We are grateful for Joe García’s legacy and service here and will cherish his memory always,” said TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz.

Before joining then-Texas A&I University at Laredo, he completed more than 25 years in the U.S. Army, retiring with the rank of Major.  He first came to Laredo to start the University’s ROTC program in 1973.

He would serve in several leadership positions, including director of Physical Plant, vice president of Finance and Administration, and as interim president for a period of nine months. He oversaw the University’s primary construction of Phases I – IV, in addition to leading the business office, human resources, campus police, physical plant, purchasing and support services, computer and telecommunications services, and payroll.

He served on numerous Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board committees and as president of the Texas Association of State Senior College & University Business Officers, president of the Southern Association of College & University Business Officers, and on the Board of Directors of the National Association of College & University Business Officers.

Upon his retirement, the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents designated him as Vice President Emeritus, Finance and Administration. After his retirement, he would go on to serve as Special Assistant for Academic Affairs at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, where he and wife Gloria relocated -- while also serving as interim vice president for Finance and Administration at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

A former president of United Way of Laredo, Laredo Kiwanis Club and Lt. Gov. of Division 26, Texas-Oklahoma District, Kiwanis International, he was a member of the Laredo Development Foundation, the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association, Laredo Chamber of Commerce Board, and founding member of Laredo’s BorderFest.

García obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Columbus State University and was a graduate of the Governor’s Executive Development Program, LBJ School of Public Affairs, and The University of Texas.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gloria, and son Joseph (Toni) and grandchildren Sebastian MacMahon and Mia García; son Philip (Emily) and grandchildren Nicolas and Alex García, and daughter Veronica (Eddie).
