A Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) administrator was recently selected to lead the Texas Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators (TACUSPA).

Mayra Hernández, director of Student Community and Community Engagement at TAMIU, was recently elected as TACUSPA’s President-Elect.

Hernández hopes to affirm her commitment to student success and foster leadership development for student affairs professionals throughout her tenure as TACUSPA President.

Student affairs professionals are a ‘best-kept secret’ in higher education. We provide a holistic out-of-the-class experience by working with the student during a transformational and critical time in their lives. We bridge academic success with the student's personal growth and development. We work with professors, administrators, families, and communities to develop the most robust and resilient individuals,” noted Hernández.

“To stay at the forefront of the profession, we must continue exploring innovative avenues to diversify our skills and recruit the strongest and brightest student affairs practitioners and scholars to maintain a world-class, educated, and prepared student and future professional,”  she observed.

At TAMIU, Hernández oversees community engagement student programming, including student disciplinary and academic conduct proceedings, student emergency services, Dusty’s Food Pantry, foster care, student grievances, community work-study, and student ethical development and leadership. She also serves as a Title IX civil rights mediator and investigator.

A first-generation Latina, she has assisted the University in garnering the United States of America Presidential Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognition and has been instrumental in the organization of TAMIU service events.

These include the Big Event and Make A Difference Day – two distinct opportunities where students can participate in a community-service initiative that have generated over $10 million dollars in monetary impact. Past projects include supporting local, community-based organizations like the Ruthe B. Cowl Rehabilitation Center, the Santo Niño neighborhood, the Laredo Housing Authority, the South Texas Food Bank, Volunteers Serving the Need, and local City parks.

Additionally, Hernández serves on various University committees and local community boards like Keep Laredo Beautiful, the Laredo Housing Authority, the Laredo Federal Credit Union, and as a co-chair of the City of Laredo Economic Development Advisory committee.

She is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Association of Student Conduct Administrators.

A proud TAMIU alumna, Hernández received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Political Science.

TACUSPA supports the development and promotion of student affairs professionals by cultivating relations and engagement that promote leadership development among current and aspiring student affairs practitioners and scholars.
