Eight Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students recently attended the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Innovation in Life Sciences Summer Camp in Galveston, TX.

The week-long program held June 11 – 16, 2023, focused on bringing together students, faculty, and health and life sciences industry leaders. Students took part in several learning opportunities, particularly in entrepreneurship in the life sciences.

TAMIU students in attendance were Isareli Contreras, Samantha Garza, Samantha Gomez, Fernanda Lomeli, Nereyda Molina, Mayer Olguin, Arleth Rios and Angela Sanchez.

Camp participants also focused on how they can be part of a dynamic, ever-changing environment situated in the continual transformative nature of the life sciences, explained Molina.

“The [Camp] provided me with an opportunity to explore and develop new entrepreneurial skills. I had the opportunity to work with mentors and learned more about what else I could accomplish, using my knowledge and skills to create an idea in life sciences,” Molina emphasized.

For Olguin, attending the Camp offered the opportunity to take part in an active learning environment with a diverse group of individuals interested in becoming innovators.

“The [Camp] was a wonderful experience. I learned so much about entrepreneurship and how science can tie into it. I also gained experience on creating startups and presenting them to an audience. It was inspiring, informative, and unforgettable,” said Olguin.

Other universities in attendance included students from St. Mary’s University, Texas A&M University–San Antonio, Texas Southern University, the University of Texas at Austin, UT- Dallas, UT-El Paso, UT-Rio Grande Valley, and UTMB. A total of 24 undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students participated in Camp sessions.
