Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) will help celebrate Public Health Week with a special lecture and presentation on student internship opportunities.

The free lecture will be offered on Teams on Wednesday, April 10 at 2 p.m. CST; the Meeting ID is 219 631 036 699.

Dr. Francisco A. Tomei Torres, a Health Scientist in the Environmental Medicine and Health Systems Intervention Section Office of Capacity Development and Applied Prevention Science, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will offer students insight in his virtual presentation on the broad range of internship opportunities available through the CDC and others.

Dr. Torres holds his Ph.D. from Harvard and has conducted post-doctoral work at Los Alamos National Laboratory.  His research is focused on Environmental Engineering. One of his most recent of over 40 publications is “Case Study: Microbial Ecology and Forensics of Chinese Drywall-Elemental Sulfur Disproportionation as Primary Generator of Hydrogen Sulfide.”

Dr. Cindy Lynn Salazar-Collier, TAMIU assistant professor of Public Health, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, said the hour-long session should inspire a broad range of TAMIU students.

“This should be of particular interest to TAMIU public health, biology, engineering, and health science students.  Securing an internship experience under the auspices of the CDC or other agencies is a remarkable opportunity and can provide students with clear insight into career possibilities within their major or adjacent fields.  Those students who have completed these experiences also enhance their viability to potential employers or graduate school admissions officers,” Dr. Salazar-Collier noted.

For additional information on the internship lecture opportunity, please reach out to Dr. Salazar-Collier at Cindy.Collier@tamiu.edu.

Registration for Maymester, Summer, and Fall 2024 is underway at TAMIU.
