Dr. Daniel Covarrubias, director of Texas A&M International University's (TAMIU) A.R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business Texas Center for Border Economic and Enterprise Development (TCBEED), recently presented at the ANTP 2024 Foro Nacional de Transporte de Mercancias, which brought together key stakeholders in the logistics and transportation sector July 12, 2024 in Playa del Carmen, México.

In a thought-provoking keynote presentation titled “Artificial Intelligence: The Future Has Arrived in Transportation and Logistics,” Dr. Covarrubias explored the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (A.I.)  on the logistics and transportation industry.

"As A.I. continues to reshape various industries, it's crucial for logistics and transportation professionals to understand both the opportunities and challenges it presents. We're witnessing a paradigm shift in how operations are managed, decisions are made, and customer experiences are delivered," Covarrubias emphasized.

His presentation focused on five key areas where A.I. is making significant changes: improved predictability, process streamlining, route optimization, cost reduction, and enhanced decision-making.

"In the rapidly evolving world of logistics and transportation, A.I. is not just a tool—it's a game-changer," Covarrubias emphasized, "We're seeing A.I. revolutionize everything from demand forecasting to real-time route optimization, fundamentally altering how we approach logistics operations."

He also discussed the emerging A.I.-centric workforce, categorizing professionals into A.I. Producers, A.I. Users, and A.I.-Aware Individuals.

"Understanding these roles is crucial for organizations as they navigate the A.I.-driven future of logistics and transportation," Covarrubias noted.

The presentation concluded with key recommendations for implementing A.I. in logistics and transportation businesses, including starting small, choosing the right partners, investing in data, identifying specific business problems, and prioritizing data security and privacy.

Reflecting on the event, Covarrubias emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to industry advancement.

"As we move forward in this A.I.-driven era of logistics and transportation, it's crucial that we not only focus on technological advancements but also on developing the human capital that will leverage these technologies," he said, noting "At TAMIU's A.R. Sanchez Jr. School of Business, we're committed to fostering this integration through our research and educational programs."

Covarrubias's participation at the ANTP 2024 Forum underscores the University’s role in advancing the conversation around technological innovation and strategic adaptation within the logistics and transportation sectors, aiming for a more efficient and progressive global trade environment for all.
