Application Process

The application process differs for U.S. residents and international students. Admission is open to all eligible persons interested in pursuing ESL or foreign language studies for personal or professional growth.

U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien Applicants:

International Students:

  • A completed ILI Application (PDF)

  • A completed Financial Statement Form that requires official certification of resources of funds from the student. You can find the form at the following link: https://www.tamiu.edu/international/documents/ISS%20Forms/2023-2024-financial-statement-form.pdf.

  • A Letter of Sponsorship (PDF) is required from the party who will financially support the applicant during their studies at the ILI. The letter should certify the sponsor's commitment to pay educational, living, health, and personal expenses of the applicant until completion of the program. A sponsor may be the student, student's parents, or a third party organization. The sponsor's letter must be dated within six months of the student's enrollment date.

  • A Bank Statement certifying you or the sponsor have sufficient funds to study in the United States for one academic year, based on Financial Statement Form and Level. The bank statement must also be dated within six months of the first enrollment according to the following dates:

Fall Semester: January 1 or after

Spring Semester: May 1 or after

Summer Session I: October 1 or after

  • Copy of current passport and visa.


Transferring International Students:

International Students transferring from an institution in the United States must submit the following additional documents:

  • Foreign Student Advisor's Report form completed by student and current Foreign Student Advisor (form provided by the ILI Office)

  • Copy of current I-20; copy of student's F1 visa

  • Copy of I-94

  • Written notification requesting dependents to be included on I-20, if applicable.

NOTE: Upon completion of the application process, successful applicants will be issued an I-20 within 7 - 10 days. Immigration documents such as passport, I-94 and I-20 ID must be carried at all times. This is in compliance with the Immigration and Nationality Act, December 24, 1952, Section 264(e). International Students are required to report any change in status immediately to the University Foreign Student Advisor.
