English Placement Test (EPT)

This test is taken by all students for whom English is a second or foreign language. The English Placement Test (EPT, published by University of Michigan) is designed to determine the level of English proficiency of each student. The EPT (which assesses listening, grammar, vocabulary and reading skills), a writing sample, and an interview are used for placement purposes at the International Language Institute. Students who wish to enroll in an ESL course must first take the English Placement Test. Additionally, students who would like to verify their English level may also take the test.

Students who wish to take the English Placement Test must call the ILI office at 956-326-2136 to schedule their exam and come by to Lamar Bruni Vergara Science Center 201 to pick up a test payment form. Cost of the exam is $35 and can be paid at the Bursar's Office with our form or through our Marketplace store here or at the following link: https://secure.touchnet.com/C20208_ustores/web/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCTID=1337.

All international students who wish to study Intensive English at Texas A&M International University and cannot take the placement test before issuance of I-20 must submit TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) results and a 500 word essay addressing why they want to study English at the International Language Institute. These students must take the placement test upon arrival at the University.
