TAMIU, Consulate General of México Sign MOU Reaffirming IME BECAS Scholarship Support

For the ninth year in a row, the Consulate General of México and Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) have renewed their continued support of the Institute of Mexicans in the Exterior (IME) Becas Program at TAMIU.

Consul General of México in Laredo Juan Carlos Mendoza Sánchez and TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Tuesday reaffirming their commitment to the IME-BECAS Program. Also signing were Miguel Conchas, president of the Mexican Cultural Institute of Laredo, and Eduardo A. Garza Robles, CEO of Uni-Trade Group.

This year, TAMIU received a total of $7,000 in scholarship funds from the IME Beca Program which will be matched by TAMIU. Additional funding incudes: $5,000 from Ermilo Richer, CEO of Richer Agencia Aduanal, and $10,000 from Uni-Trade Forwarding through the Mexican Cultural Institute.

A total of 37 students are receiving the 2022 IME-BECAS Scholarship. The recipients include José Bautista, Mayra Can, Andrea Castillo, Giselle Fernández, Eduardo García, Mariana García, Rosie I. García, Jatziry García Téllez, Jennifer García Téllez, Edith Garza Garza, Deserey Gómez, Anakaren González, Briselda González Muñoz, Jesús Guerra Barco, Dora Guerrero, Juan Gutiérrez, Lourdes Hernández, Alejandro Lozano Delgado, Adriana Malagón, Pablo Méndez, María Moreno Cruz, Andrea Moreno López, Daniela Mussot Angulo, Salma Pelayo Ruiz, and Keila Pérez Ramírez.

Also receiving the Scholarship are Rosalinda Puentes, Lizeth Quiroz, Rebeca Reyes, Emmanuel Reyes Corona, Ximena Ríos, Alexa Rodríguez Vela, Karla Sánchez, Carlos Sosa, María Tovar Alemán, Cristina Tzintzun, Crystal Vásquez, and Ernesto Villanueva Espinosa. The students were joined by family and friends at the ceremony.

Since 2013, the IME-BECAS Program has awarded a total of $221,690 in scholarship funds between the Consulate, community partners and TAMIU's matching funds. The Program supports Mexican students residing abroad in the United States by providing them with additional educational resources.

The Government of México prioritizes its Mexican population living abroad in the United States by providing educational resources through the Program. IME BECAS recognizes the importance of Mexicans working or studying in the United States and their participation in educational programs that contribute to their development.

Each year, the scholarship is made available to both undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at TAMIU. They are required to submit proof of Mexican citizenship, be enrolled full-time, maintain an overall GPA of 2.75 or greater or submit a high school GPA of 3.0 or greater for any incoming freshman students.
