Texas A&M International University (TAMIU)  honored four exceptional professional women at a special panel discussion organized in celebration of International Women's Day Thursday, March 7  in Western Hemispheric Trade Center (WHTC) 111.

The panel was free and open to the public.

It was organized by the TAMIU Office of Global Initiatives/Binational Center to recognize outstanding professional women from the South Texas region who are leaders in the areas of Education, International Business, Law, and Healthcare.

"The TAMIU Office of Global Initiatives/Binational Center organizes this annual event to recognize successful professional women from South Texas and inspire future generations of women to pursue their goals and career paths," said María Eugenia Calderon-Porter, TAMIU assistant vice president, Office of Global Initiatives/Binational Center.

2024 honorees and the professional areas they represent were: Margarita Taboada, Hector J. García Early College High School principal; Elia Guevara, Association of Laredo Logistics and Forwarding Agents vice president; Marina García Marmolejo, U.S. District Judge, and Dr. Marissa R. González, family physician.

Officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, International Women's Day first emerged from the activities of labor movements at the turn of the 20th Century in North America and across Europe. Celebrated globally, it is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political.

The Office of Global Initiatives/Binational Center enhances relationships between TAMIU and the global community by promoting civic and social organizations and institutions through research, education, leadership, and public service. The Binational Center is a member of the World Affairs Councils of America, the largest national non-partisan network of almost 100 councils in over 40 states dedicated to educating and engaging Americans about critical global issues.
