Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has once again been recognized as one of the nation's Top Ten-ranked Southern Colleges in Washington Monthly Magazine's 2024 College Guide "Best Bang for the Buck," ranking #5.  TAMIU also earned a # 2 ranking for low net price.

TAMIU was the highest-ranked regional campus of The Texas A&M University System. It was joined in the ranking of 218 Texas public and private institutions by System members Texas A&M-San Antonio (#9), Texas A&M-Texarkana (#12), and Texas A&M University (#28). TAMIU also had a lower net price of attendance for families earning less than $75,000 income at $3,853. Another regional university, the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley’s cost was $4,637.

Washington Monthly’s College Guide surveys 1,444 colleges including public, private nonprofit, and for-profit colleges. Its rankings are considered an exclusive summary of schools ranked according to how well they help non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices. The list is created by isolating social mobility metrics...how students and graduates improve their economic standing...from the main rankings of four-year institutions.

TAMIU was also ranked in Washington Monthly’s 2024 Master’s University national rankings. Of 589 institutions offering graduate degrees, TAMIU earned a ranking of #59 nationally, the highest ranking of any Texas institution in any State System.

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz said he is impressed by the rankings as they affirm the University’s core values.

“I am truly pleased with these rankings as they affirm our core promise to be Accessible, Affordable, and Exceptional.  I think Washington Monthly’s rankings also underscore elements of the TAMIU experience that distinguish it: our faculty, and how they empower our students. I also appreciate how the College Guide values experiences like public service and research, which we are strongly committed to,” Dr. Arenaz said.

Southern institutions included in the Best Bang for the Buck ranking include Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.   Washington Monthly rankings consist of three equally weighted portions: social mobility, research, and community and national service.  Social mobility is key to the Best Bang rankings.

In the College Guide, writer Rob Wolfe has observed, “America needs a new definition of higher education excellence, one that measures what colleges do for their country, instead of for themselves.”

In other ranking news, last week TAMIU was awarded an overall Niche grade of A-. The Pittsburgh-based company annually ranks colleges with a cross-section of measured offerings and values.

Among Niche rankings, TAMIU was recognized as the #4 Best Value in Texas (Rice University #1; University of Texas-Permian Basin, #2, and University of Texas – Austin, #3.); the #7 Top Public Universities in Texas, and the #11 Best College in Texas.
