Bloodborne pathogens are microorganisms found in the blood of infected individuals that cause diseases. They may also be present in “other potentially infectious materials,” such as blood-tainted body fluids, unfixed tissues or body parts, some biological research materials, and even other primates. These pathogens are a concern because they are capable of infecting others who are exposed to infectious blood or other body fluids.
A well-designed office allows each employee to work comfortably without needing to over-reach, sit or stand too long, or use awkward postures (correct ergonomic design). Sometimes, equipment or furniture changes are the best solution to allow employees to work comfortably.
The Respiratory Protection Program integrates exposure assessment, risk mitigation and medical surveillance services to protect the occupational health and safety of TAMIU employees and to comply with federal and state regulations.
People who use respiratory protection must be physically capable of using and wearing the equipment. In some cases, a physician must determine if an employee is healthy enough to use a respirator. In addition, all people required to wear respirators must be formally trained and instructed in proper equipment usage.
Choosing the right respirator for the job is equally important to knowing how to use it. There are many types of respirators, and each type protects against different hazards.
IMPORTANT: Respirators are available in different sizes. Always fit test a respirator to select the correct size.
This includes those aspects pertaining to the safe working with and/or around biological substances, animals, pathogenic material, and more in a laboratory setting.
Who must enroll in the Occupational Health Program?
The IBC and/or IACUC protocol will determine who needs to enroll in the OHP based on protocol review.
How does this affect IBC and/or IACUC approval?
IBC or IACUC cannot release the approval letter for the protocol until all listed personnel are verified as enrolled.
How often do I have to enroll?
OHP enrollment is verified by the IBC or IACUC at continuing review.
