About

Who are we?

The Office of Instructional Technology and Distance Education Services provides services designed to enhance and facilitate the learning and teaching experience of Texas A&M International University faculty, staff, and students. The University offers the following online degree programs: 1 undergraduate program, 13 graduate programs, and a certificate program designed to extend beyond the usual classroom boundaries (online).

Our office is divided into two main teams:

  • Instructional Technology (eLearning) - You're currently on our site!
  • Classroom Technology Support - Visit the ITSS site for more details.

This website guides everything related to online education (eLearning) at TAMIU. We regularly update our site to reflect the latest changes and continuously improve our programs.

Definitions

Distance Education - The formal educational process that occurs when students and instructors are in separate physical locations for the majority (more than 50 percent) of instruction.

Distance Education Course - A course in which a majority (more than 50 percent) of the instruction occurs when the student(s) and instructor(s) are in separate physical locations. The definition of distance education course does not include courses with 50 percent or less instruction when the student(s) and instructor(s) are in separate physical locations. Two categories of distance education courses are defined:

  • 100-Percent Online Course - A distance education course in which 100 percent of instructional activity takes place when the student(s) and instructor(s) are in separate physical locations. Requirements for on-campus or in-person orientation, testing, academic support services, internships/fieldwork, or other non-instructional activities do not exclude a course from this category.
  • Hybrid Course - A distance education course in which more than 50 percent but less than 100 percent of instructional activity takes place when the student(s) and instructor(s) are in separate physical locations.

Distance Education Goals

1. Create, support, and enhance the instructional technology activities of the TAMIU Community.

2. Increase learning opportunities in instructional technologies for faculty and students.

3. Continue implementing and expanding the Quality Matters standards in all newly developed online and hybrid courses.

4. Maintain and expand collaborative service efforts with regional school districts and institutions of higher education.

5. Promote, recognize, and reward excellence among faculty integrating technology.
